Mayor-elect Tenby Powell has announced the proposed appointment of third-term Councillor Larry Baldock as Deputy Mayor of Tauranga City Council.
'Larry is a hard-working, senior and experienced councillor and brings strong national and local government service to the role,” he says.
'His understanding of the Local Government Act and his measured and pragmatic approach has been, and will continue to be, of considerable value to the Council and I look forward to working with him to advance the city's interests.”
A former United Future MP, Councillor Baldock represents the Otumoetai/Pyes Pa ward and served as the chair of the Urban Form and Transport Development Committee during the 2016-19 triennium.
He was also deputy chair of the Hearings Committee and was a member of the SmartGrowth Leadership Group and the Dive Crescent Governance Group. Larry will continue in leadership roles on these committees.
Tenby has also acknowledged the significant contribution made by former deputy mayor Kelvin Clout.
'Kelvin has served six years as deputy mayor and has helped lead the Council through a period of major investment and has been an active proponent of community engagement.
"Kelvin will continue to provide senior leadership to the Council, particularly in the area of projects, services and operations.
"I thank Kelvin for his service and look forward to working with him positively for the future of Tauranga."
The deputy mayoral appointment will be formalised at the Council's inaugural meeting on Thursday, October 24, following the swearing-in of the mayor and councillors.

In my dealings with Mr Baldcock he didn’t get back to me with any answers to my questions and just mumbled and bumbled some nonsense aka bull****. I cannot believe people voted for him.
Larry?

I'm staggered he gained any votes. Full of words, empty of actions. Grave concerns about how the new council is shaping up. Words are cheap, actions have values. Larry certainly wasn't interested when I asked for his help in his ward.
Unbelievable

All I can say is Larry has had his chances and failed why Tenby has taken him as Deputy is puzzling.

Cmon man. You don’t appoint somebody who might challenge you, or was a recent challenger. You appoint someone weak. Grovelling. Someone who will hang on every word and snitch. Someone who will clean yer shoes and pick up your dry cleaning. Good boy Larry.

“More democracy, less bureaucracy” said Larry. Now here he is as Deputy dog with no votes. Figure that Larry! Brass neck.

Wow, this is more than a scary start to a new council. We wanted a breath of fresh air with direction. If we had another vote right now we would not have the same mayor and guaranteed not a useless duty major. This totally nuts, when I wake up hopefully the nightmare will have gone but unfortunately we are now in HUGE trouble
