SH29 closed after serious truck crash

UPDATE: 3.20PM: State Highway 29 is now completely closed from Te Poi through to Tauriko.

The NZTA have closed the road between SH28 and Cambridge Road.

'Please delay your journey or use an alternative route.”

Diversions:

Eastbound traffic: Turn right onto SH28, then left onto SH5 and left on SH36 back to SH29 Westbound (light vehicle only): Omanawa Rd, Peers Rd, McLaren Falls Rd then back onto SH29. Westbound heavy vehicles use SH2 for North or SH36 for South.

It is unknown at this stage when the road will reopen.

EARLIER:

UPDTAED 2.16PM: Emergency services are responding to a crash on SH 29 between Omanawa Road and Ruahihi Road.

The crash, between a truck and a car, was reported to Police around 1:40pm.

"Initial reports are that one person has sustained moderate injuries," says a police spokesperson.

"The road is currently blocked and diversions are in place.

"Motorists are advised to expect delays."

Eastbound: Poripori Rd, Crawford Rd, Wairoa Rd then onto SH2 for Tauranga. Westbound (light vehicle only): Omanawa Rd, Peers Rd, McLaren Falls Rd then back onto SH29. Westbound heavy vehicles use SH2 for North or SH36 for South.

EARLIER:

Traffic is backing up on State Highway 29 following reports of a crash.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic ia backing up on th highway near the Ruahihi Power Station.

"A truck appears to be on its side. The road looks like it is completely blocked."

Motorists are advised to expect delays or avoid the area the if possible.

NZTA says a "serious incident has been reported to emergency services".

"Delays are possible and an update will be provided as soon as more inforamtion is available."
