What’s on – beach party, yachts and art

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter Open Day is on today at the Ian Pain Memorial Hangar behind Tauranga Hospital.

Today we are expecting a fine day with light winds. It's a two-clothing day with a high of 18 degrees expected and an overnight low of 8 degrees.

On Monday September 23, the weather forecast is for a partly cloudy day with westerlies.

Going into the week, Tuesday may have periods of rain developing in the morning and the rest of the week will become fine with some southwesterlies expected.

The Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter will be on display today at the Ian Pain Memorial Hangar in Clarke St behind Tauranga Hospital from 10am – 2pm, along with live demonstrations by emergency services. The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter Open Day will also feature burger and barbeque food trucks, raffles, an icecream truck, thirst quenchers, face painting, and live demos. Gold coin donation is welcomed.

Waihi Beach have a beach party on today with sand sculpture competition, kids' treasure dig, live music and a beach clean up. Click here for more information.

World Car Free Day is being celebrated in Tauranga today with a street party in First Ave from 10am – 3pm. Come and join in the fun with the pop-up ice-skating rink, giant games, a treasure hunt, the urban chill-out zone and more. Check out what else is happening by clicking here

The Mauao Performing Arts Centre will be hosting the Term 3 Student Concert from 4 -7pm today at 11 Totara St, Mount Maunganui. Come along and watch the stage come alive with some of the Bay's best young talent from MauaoPac.

A few hundred jet skis will be heading out to Mayor Island this morning, leaving Pilot Bay at 9am. Keep an eye out for when they all return later in the day. More here

Also taking to the water today will be yachts from the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club as the Opening Day Race gets underway around Tauranga harbour from 1pm.

The Wheelchair Basketball Nationals are being held today at Trustpower Baypark from from 9am – 3pm. Everyone is welcome to this free event. Check out more information here

Also happening at Whakamarama is the Steamtember Artorama exhibition at the Atrium Gallery. This is a collaboration with Steampunk Tauranga to raise funds for the NZ Prostate Cancer Foundation. The Atrium Gallery is open from 11am, Wednesday to Sunday.

Arty Darty – a dartboard cabinet exhibition is on at The People's Gallery – Toi ka rere at Tauranga Historic Village. The cabinets will be auctioned off from the exhibition via the Incubator Facebook page to help fundraise for a youth dart program called Young Guns, which helps a number of youth get support in their sport in addition to providing them with the equipment they need to compete.
