Police have released the name of a man who died in a crash in the Bay of Plenty last month.

John William Kronast died in a crash on State Highway 2, south west of Opotiki, on Friday 19 July.

The 61-year-old was from Opotiki, says a police spokesperson.

"Our thoughts are with Mr Kronast's family and loved ones at this time.

"An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing."
