An early morning crash in the Tauranga suburb of Bellevue caused a loss of power to many residents in the area.

A vehicle struck a ground-mounted electricity transformer causing the power outage.

Powerco's network operations manager Phil Marsh says more than 1400 customers were initially affected at 12.20am but most had power restored by 3am.

'Our contractors then installed a generator to have everyone back on by 5am.

'Repairs are underway and there may be a brief disruption later today once those are completed and customers are reconnected to the main network.”

A police spokesperson says they received a report of a crash on Windsor Road, Bellevue, around 12.30am this morning.

'The vehicle reportedly collided with a transformer.

'No injuries were reported.”
