It's back to school for students around the Bay of Plenty this week and the New Zealand Police are out in force to make sure drivers remember what's required when they get behind the wheel.
SunLive tagged along with the officers as they enforced a checkpoint outside Papamoa College.
Over the years, police have found that during the two week school holiday break sometimes students will forget road rules during that time, and many motorists forget the speed limit when driving through a school zone.
'We are making sure vehicles are registered, have a current WOF, and students are driving to their licence conditions,” says road policing acting Senior Sergeant Ian Sadler.
'The reason behind this campaign is ensuring safety to those most at risk.”
Making sure seatbelts are buckled and phones are away is one of the police's top priority towards college students.
Ian says what they hope to achieve from doing these checkpoints is to help prevent crashes, and to help prevent the degree of injury.
While observing the checkpoint, many of the drivers stopped by police were following the rules.
