'Heinous attack': Woman injured in BOP assault

Police located a suspect in Whakatāne shortly after 12.30am today.

Police are investigating what they called a “heinous attack” near Whakatāne last night.

Eastern Bay of Plenty area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said police were notified of an assault on Ohiwa Harbour Rd about 10.30pm yesterday.

A suspect was located on Phoenix Dr, Whakatāne, shortly after 12.30am today. He was arrested and charged with offences including abduction and indecent assault.

“The victim is understandably extremely shaken and has sustained moderate injuries following the assault,” Wilson said.

“Police are offering her all the necessary support.”

A scene examination was being carried out on Ohiwa Harbour Rd, and police continued to investigate the “heinous attack”.

“We understand the community will be shaken following this incident, and police will conduct reassurance patrols in the area.

“Our initial inquiries suggest this is an isolated incident, and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.”

Wilson said the accused, who was 34, was due to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today, charged with abduction, wounding with reckless disregard and assault with intent to commit sexual violation, indecent assault, and strangulation.
