NZTA have advised that the Waimana Gorge will remain closed for another two weeks until approximately Friday July 26.

The road, connecting Taneatua to Waimana, is completely closed in both directions.

"SH2 Waimana Gorge remains closed," says an NZTA spokesperson. "While the wet weather has had some impact on work this week our contractors have made good progress.

"We are expecting to continue drilling next week and should have a better idea of when we will be able to re-open the road by the end of next week. Continue to follow the detour."

A significant slip occurred on Thursday July 4 between Stanley Rd and Fraser Rd, following rain and severe flooding of the Whakatane River.

NZTA recommend motorists take a detour route. For eastbound this is via Whakatane –Ohope -Wainui. Westbound traffic are directed to go via Wainui – Ohope -Whakatane.

The NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding and patience.
