Police are seeking witnesses to a serious crash on State Highway 30, near Braemar Rd, Rotoma.
Police were alerted to the two vehicle crash at around 2:15pm.
Eight people were injured in the crash, says a police spokesperson.
"The road has been closed and could stay that way for several hours while the Serious Crash Unit investigates.
"Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area."
Members of the public with information on the crash are urged to contact the Whakatane Police Station on 07 308 5255.
