Severe weather warning for BOP

The MetService is forecasting heavy rain for later this afternoon.

People in the Bay of Plenty, including Tauranga, are being warned to brace for heavy rain today.

The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the Bay of Plenty.

It says heavy rain is being forecast for Westland and Eastern Bay of Plenty.

'An active front moves northeastwards across the South Island tonight, and onto the North Island during Friday, bringing a burst of heavy rain.

'The heaviest falls are expected in the ranges of Westland, and in eastern Bay of Plenty, which has been added to this warning.”
Heavy rain has fallen in Fiordland, but has now eased, and the warning has been lifted.

'People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts, warnings and watches.”

Heavy Rain Warning

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Area: Bay of Plenty east of Whakatane
Valid: 21 hours from 6am Friday to 3am Saturday
Forecast: Expect 80 to 130mm of rain. Peak rates of 15 to 30mm/h, especially in thunderstorms.
Changes: Upgraded to full Warning

Area: The ranges of Westland
Valid: 5 hours from 8pm Thursday to 1am Friday
Forecast: Expect a further 50 to 90mm of rain to accumulate, on top of what has already fallen. Peak rates of 20 to 30mm/h, and thunderstorms possible.
