Electric buses set to hit streets of Tauranga

NZ Bus has the contract for Bayhopper.

Tauranga is set to get its first electric bus this August.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council chief executive Fiona McTavish says it's the first of five electric buses that will be rolled out across the network.

'We are committed to low carbon public transport. Transportation emissions represent the largest emissions sector for Tauranga City.

NZ Bus Chief Executive Zane Fulljames says the electric buses would be built in China by preferred supplier Alexander Dennis, the company that built Auckland city's first two electric commuter buses.

Confirmation of Tauranga's first electric bus was made in an announcement on Friday.

Fiona says that Council is still looking forward to having electric buses in Tauranga later this year, but in the meantime there's plenty of other work to be done to keep improving the Tauranga bus network.

'We will continue to work with our partners – and our community – to ensure that our public transport network is running as efficiently and effectively as possible, as soon as possible.”

This is great news for the community BUT will these new buses now run on "time" and be more efficient than the diesel buses? Didn't the Chief Executive realise we did have an efficient bus service prior to the present operators taking over!!

Cunning Distraction

Maybe the NZ Bus execs think that launching some new electric buses will distract everyone from the horror show that is their current bus system. My daughter talks everyday about buses not coming, buses taking the wrong route, buses being overcrowded or the driver stopping mid-route and kicking all the kids off and making them walk home! Its amazing how electric buses will fix everything!

Just a distraction to take away their incompetence in running an effencent bus service.

Shouldn’t this bus company losing the contract in Wellington send warning bells to the council.
