BOP highway reopens after ’absolute tragedy’

State Highway 2, near Matata, is open this morning following a triple fatal crash.

The highway was closed between Pikowai and Matata with multiple vehicles crashed around 2pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services were notified around 1.50pm that a car and truck had collided.

"It has now been confirmed that four separate vehicles were involved in the crash," says a police spokesperson.

"A total of three people have died at the scene."

All three road workers were working for roading and infrastructure company Higgins Contractors, part of Fletcher Building.

Two of the victims were part of the business and one was a contractor working for them, Fletcher Building chief executive Ross Taylor said in a statement.

Two others injured were contractors.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of the three people who died and two who were injured in a traffic accident in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon," says Taylor.

"This is an absolute tragedy, and we are moving to offer our support to those affected and to our people in the area."

According to the NZTA, the highway was opened around 11pm.

Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the crash please contact Whakatane Police on (07) 308 5255.

"In particular we would like to speak to a paraglider who was above the scene of the crash when it occurred."
