Speed warning around BOP road works

Police are reminding road users to be safe around road works.

Police officers in the Bay of Plenty are reminding motorists to keep to the recommended speed this holiday season, especially around road works.

The New Zealand Police want people to be safe on our road. That includes every road user from, drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians to road workers.

A police spokesperson says it's important to drive safely through road works areas.

'The lower speed limit is there for a reason, there is work happening on the road so the road surface may be affected, and there are people working on the road who need to be safe and feel safe.

'We can enforce speed limits at any time anywhere. It's vital you drive to the conditions, including the lower speed limit.

'Watch your following distances, and stay aware and respectful of the people working on the road around you.”

Many go through roadworks by the stadium in excess of 100kph but I have never seen any sign of the police there

Fair enough when they're working!

What really rips the crotch out of my kilt is when roadworkers are just to lazy to bring in the signs when no work is being done. There's speed restrictions at SH2 and Old Tauranga road near Waihi, WHY? There's a few road cones strewn about but nobody there doing any work! There's no reason for the restriction! So it's just hypocritical to demand that we follow these restrictions when most of the time there's no reason for them. If they would just buckle down and get the work done then ok but they have the bare-faced cheek to complain when they are the ones who've caused this complacency by Motorists because of the own laziness! Just look at the time it took to build the stupid roundabout at TePuna. 2 Years down the track and Omokoroa road's nowhere near finished.

Too Early

Pass through the area around 06:50 in the morning. The Digital speed indicator is always flashing slow down and indicating speeds of in excess of 60Km/hr. Any excess speed fine in a workplace area should have an automatic $1,000 Health and Safety in the Workplace penalty attached. What I have noticed is, that the dodgy drivers out there all wear high-vis garments inside their vehicles. It is great to have the warning.
