On this day in NZ history in 1912 a striker was fatally wounded at Waihī. Striking worker Fred Evans was badly injured in the goldmining town of Waihī. He died the next day.

Today is the birthday of DeWitt Wallace, founder of Reader's Digest. Born in 1889, DeWitt once said 'I do believe in the value of ideas—and that eventually they get a man somewhere.”
