A record number of Year five and six school teams, will take place in the annual Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup to be played at the Bay Oval and Blake Park on Wednesday November 7 2018.

The BOPCA Regional cricket festivals are to be held in Eastern and Western Bay of Plenty. Rotorua and Taupo and follow on from the NZ Cricket Superstarter program school visits during August and September.

This year's Western Bay Mini World Cup is the 15th occasion that the popular junior cricket festival has been held. The first Western Bay Mini World Cup played at Waipuna Park attracted just a dozen teams from eight schools.

A major attraction at the Mini World Cup, is that the teams represent an ICC cricket nation, with many of the schools dressing up in the colours of the country that they are representing. A by-product of the tournament is a number of schools undertake some geographical study on their allotted country.

The random draw has given Pahoia School number one, the coveted New Zealand selection. The record entries have seen the organisers trawling the list of 93 ICC associate members to come up with enough cricket playing nations.

An interesting aside, is that United Arab Emirates, Canada, Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, Papaua New Guinea and Nepal, who will be represented at the Western Bay Mini World Cup – all played at the Bay Oval during the 2014 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
