Two people are dead and three others have been injured following a crash near Tokoroa.

Speed restrictions are in place on State Highway 1, south of Tokoroa, following the fatal crash.

Emergency services were called to the crash shortly after 5pm. The road was closed for several hours, but was re-opened around 10pm.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash, which occured shortly after 5pm, to contact Taupo Police on 07 378 6060.

"Police would also like to thank members of the public who stopped and assisted at the scene in the immediate aftermath of the crash," says a police spokesperson.

"Some people provided blankets and clothing to assist victims at the scene, if this was you and you would like the items back please contact Taupo Police."

The Serious Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
