Tornados, heavy rain and hail all in one day

Reports are coming in of a funnel cloud being spotted in Tauranga this afternoon.

Horton Stewart sent in a video to SunLive show the formation of a funnel cloud over Cameron Road.

He described it as a mini tornado seen from Pak'n'Save carpark and was followed by hail.

"You could see it turning much faster without the camera!"

A tornado was spotted near Hamilton earlier today.

MetService meteorologist Cameron Coutts says it's not usual for them to form at this time of the year.

'They are reasonably common during this time of the year with Spring conditions, with a colder upper atmosphere and some good daytime heating at lower levels.”

This can lead to heavy showers, thunderstorms, hail and sometime funnel clouds.

'It's remaining a little unsettled through until the evening, most of the thunderstorm risks should be easing as we head into the darker hours,” says Cameron.

'There is still a risk of hail that will continue until the early evening as well.

'There are still some good showers about, but they are fairly scattered, so there will be some reasonable fine breaks.”

Heading into Tuesday, Cameron says it's fine overnight, with another round of showers popping up tomorrow afternoon.

'Again, they could be heavy with possible thunderstorms from the afternoon into the late evening.”
