One person critical following Waihi crash

One person has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition following a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 south of Waihi.

A police media spokesperson says the crash has happened near Old Tauranga Road.

"The road remains closed and is likely to remain so for some time while repairs to the road are undertaken," says police.

NZTA has advised the road is closed between Waihi Beach Road and Athenree Road.

"Diversions are in place southbound from SH2 via Waihi Beach Road, Wilson Road, Seaforth Road, Emerton Road and Athenree Road back to SH2, and for northbound in reverse.

"The detour route is not suitable for HPMVs."

Meanwhile emergency services are also at the scene of a crash on Bethlehem Road.

"Emergency services were called about 2.05pm after a car hit a power pole. It's understood lines are down.

"No one appears to be injured."
