Lightning out at sea and this week’s weather

Lightning strikes that were seen out to sea on Friday night, were in fact further out to sea than it seemed.

MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey says that there were quite a few lightning strikes over the water in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

'It was possible that they were a bit further east than what it seemed. They were almost east of White Island.

'There were a handful of strikes, around five over the land, east of Papamoa. There was quite a big cluster just east of White Island.”

While there are no more lightning strikes forecast for the rest of the week, there are some showers forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow morning.

Stephen says looking further into this week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, MetService is forecasting mainly fine weather, with just some isolated afternoon showers.

'There is a weak front that's moving over the Bay of Plenty tomorrow morning, so we are expecting a little bit of rain tomorrow morning. However once that goes through it is looking like a pretty settled week.”

The temperatures are expected to reach into the high teens with the overnight lows reaching an average of 10 degrees.
