What’s on? Free yoga for caregivers

Some of the communities most vital support people will have the chance to recharge their own batteries, through a free workshop this weekend.

The Light Studio in Mount Maunganui, is hosting a free open yoga session this Saturday for community caregivers throughout the city.

Owner Soreya James says this means hospice staff, in-home caregivers, doctors, nurses, and many others who work on a daily basis to care for others, will be able to attend a yoga class completely free of charge.

'We've always wanted to support the community and this is a good start,” she says.

She says the reason behind it is a personal one, but also the result of her seeing a need to do some social good for her own community.

'I lost my brother three years ago to motor neuron disease. Due to his condition he was not able to leave his bed, meaning he was cared for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Around the same time, she also began teaching yoga.

'I've learnt a special form where if someone is in a wheelchair, in a bed or in hospice: they can do this particular style of yoga.

'When we opened our yoga studio, we recognised there was a real need in the community to support people that take care of others.

'They are underpaid, overworked and we wanted to reach out and gift them something that can be beneficial for their own mental health and well-being.

'We want to take care of people who are taking care of other people.”

The class is the first of many she hopes to host, this weekend is just the beginning of what she expects will become a monthly event.

'But it could become more regular than that if it gains enough interest, we're really just seeing how it goes.

'We're open to sending our teachers out to wherever they need to be whether that means; sending them into hospice, hospitals, or people's own homes.

'We have a large scope of people we want to reach.”

She says the day will be a gentle beginner's class focussing on mindfulness and breathing techniques. She encourages anyone wanting to come along to go at their own pace.

The session is being facilitated by Claudia Wong and will be hosted this Saturday from 11am to 12.15pm at The Light Room 325 Maunganui Rd.

All mats and gear will be provided.
