State Highway 35 near Whitianga Bay in the eastern Bay of Plenty is now open to one lane.
New Zealand Transport Agency says people should still to continue to exercise caution along the whole Opotiki to Gisborne route.
The Whitianga Bay slip, which is about 40 kilometres from Opotiki, occurred on Saturday morning, and motorists may see other parts of SH35 also down to one lane.
NZTA Bay of Plenty Transport System Manager, Rob Campbell says the Whitianga Bay site will be monitored overnight.
"People should continue to check the website and social media or call us on 0800 4 HIGHWAYS before travelling through this area to check that the road is still open."
The NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding and patience and asks them to remain cautious in this area.
