Welcome to Daffodil Day!

In today's forecast we are expecting a few afternoon showers with westerlies dying out.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 17 and an overnight low of 6 degrees. Humidity is 85 per cent.

High tide is at 9.50am and low tide is at 4 pm (Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of 1.3m with a sea temperature of 14 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.49pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 2.30 and 4.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1841 the Sophie Pate was wrecked on a sandbar at the entrance to Kaipara Harbour with the loss of 21 lives, highlighting the dangers of navigating New Zealand's poorly charted coastal waters.

In 1894 the Arbitration Act became law. The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration (IC&A) Act made New Zealand the first country in the world to outlaw strikes and introduce compulsory arbitration.

In 1974 Norman Kirk died. Leader of the Labour Party since 1965 and Prime Minister since late 1972, 'Big Norm' died suddenly at the age of 51. He was the fifth New Zealand PM to die in office.

In world history on this day in 1895 German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin patented his navigable balloon. In 1897 Thomas Edison patented the Kinetoscope, the first movie projector.

In 1961 a concrete wall replaced the barbed wire fence that separated East and West Germany. It came to be called the Berlin Wall. In 1990 East and West Germany signed the Treaty of Unification (Einigungsvertrag) to join their legal and political systems.

In 1994 the Irish Republican Army (IRA) announced a 'complete cessation of military operations,” opening the way to a political settlement in Ireland for the first time in a quarter of a century.

In 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, her companion Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul died in a car crash in Paris.

Today is the birthday of Maria Montessori, educator and founder of the Montessori schools. Born in 1870 she once said "One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child."
