Sunny fine day

In today's forecast we are expecting a fine day with light winds.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 6 degrees. Humidity is 90 per cent.

Low tide is at 1.20pm and high tide is at 7.40pm. There's a sea swell of .2m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.46pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 3.30 and 6.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1904 the foundation stone for Victoria University's first building was laid. Victoria College (now Victoria University of Wellington) was founded in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's 60th jubilee. Until the opening of the Kelburn building in 1906, classes were taught in rented rooms.

In world history on this day in 1776 the Americans were defeated by the British at the Battle of Long Island, New York. In 1910 Thomas Edison demonstrated the first 'talking” pictures–using a phonograph–in his New Jersey laboratory.

In 1912 Edgar Rice Burrough‘s Tarzan of the Apes first appeared in a magazine. In 1975 Veronica & Colin Scargill of England completed a tandem bicycle ride around the world, a record 29,000.4 km.

In 2003 Mars made its closest approach to Earth in nearly 60,000 years, passing within 34,646,418 miles (55,758,005 km). In 2012 the first interplanetary human voice recording was broadcast from the Mars Rover Curiosity.

Today is the birthday of German idealist philosopher George William Hegel. Born in 1770 he once said "Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion."
