The NZ Transport Agency is asking people who use State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Range to complete a survey to give feedback on the Weather Activated Variable Speed Limit signs.
The signs encourage people to drive at safe speeds that are appropriate to the road conditions when rain, ice and fog hit the Kaimai Range.
They are part of a trial and were put in place in November 2015 to reduce the number of people being killed or seriously injured.
NZ Transport Agency Senior Project Manager, Angela Crean, says initial crash results show there has been a reduction in the number and severity of crashes, but we need to hear from the public as well.
'We need to know how people who use this road think the signs performed so that we can add that data into our overall picture.
'People can complete the survey by heading to the NZTA website and typing in ‘29 speed limit sign survey' or use the link below."
Data shows that over 70 per cent of the crashes on the range happen in wet weather.
More than 40 per cent of these were caused by drivers travelling too fast for the conditions. The speed people travel is also the major contributor to the severity of the crash.
The survey can be found at: www.nzta.govt.nz/sh29speedlimitsurvey
Comments made on social media can't be included due to the survey format.
The survey opened on 14 August 2018 and closes at 4.00pm on 11 September 2018.

Here's hoping

Given that very few people actually obey the reduced speed limits (usually because they are still in place for a reason that ceased to exist several hours ago) I hope that these drivers all respond to the survey and tell NZTA exactly what a pigs ear they made of what should have been a great initiative.
How many times have I driven up the highway

with clear visibility and a dry road with the signs flashing 60. At other times the weather is nasty and the signs are not working!
