In NZ history on this day in In 1969 the first ‘Young Farmer of the Year' was chosen. Held at the South Pacific Hotel in Auckland, the competition was open to all members of the Young Farmers' Club. The inaugural winner was Gary Frazer from Swannanoa, near Christchurch. The contest has become an established part of the farming calendar.

Today is the birthday of French physicist, mathematician and inventor Denis Papin. Born in 1647 he was best known for his pioneering invention of the steam digester, the forerunner of the pressure cooker, and of the steam engine. He once said "I felt confident that machines might be constructed wherein water, by means of no very intense heat, and at small cost, might produce that perfect vacuum which had failed to be obtained by aid of gunpowder."
