Tauranga women to get a spring in their step

Three local golf clubs are offering discounted lessons this year – Otumoetai, Omokora and Omanu.

Sport Bay of Plenty is encouraging women to put a spring in their step and try a new sport or recreational activity as part of its Spring Starter Series.

Now in its third year, the popular series offers women a range of low-cost or free beginners' activities across four, five or six-week blocks in the Western, Eastern and Central Bay of Plenty.

This year's activities include everything from golf and yoga, to Pilates, rock climbing and swimming lessons.

Sport Bay of Plenty's recreation team leader Sonia Lynds says the activities are designed to be fun, social and supportive, and the range of options ensures there's something for all ages, abilities and fitness levels.

'The recent Active NZ survey by Sport New Zealand shows that, on average, females of all ages are more likely than males to want to participate more.

'However we know that time, prioritising family, and knowing where or who to connect with for the right activity are all barriers to participation.”

Sonia says the Spring Starter Series helps remove those barriers by linking locals with a variety of activity providers and offering sessions at a range of times across the day and week to suit everyone.

Golf has proven to be one of the most popular activities over the last two years. Jan Higgins, club professional at Otumoetai Golf Club, said the series is a great way to promote the sport to local women.

'The benefits for women include meeting others who are interested in the same sport, and getting active.”

The series is hosted by Sport Bay of Plenty's Play in the Bay initiative, a project which aims to connect the community with low-cost, accessible ways to explore the region and get involved in sport and recreation. Sport Bay of Plenty is working with a number of activity providers from around the Bay to make the series possible.

Registrations are open until Tuesday, August 28 and places are limited.
