Steamboats, cartoons and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting a few showers turning to rain in the late morning, with a chance of thunderstorms, clearing to fine in the afternoon as northwesterlies turn westerly.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 16 and an overnight low of 7 degrees. Humidity is 88 per cent.

High tide is at 11.10am and low tide is at 5.20pm. There's a sea swell of .2m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.37pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 4.30 and 6.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1839 the New Zealand Company ship Tory arrived. The sailing ship Tory dropped anchor in Queen Charlotte Sound to pick up fresh water, food and wood before proceeding to Port Nicholson in the Wellington Harbour.

In 1942 118 New Zealand prisoners of war died when the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean.

In world history on this day in 1807 Robert Fulton's North River Steamboat left New York City for Albany, New York, on the Hudson River, inaugurating the first commercial steamboat service in the world. In 1908 Fantasmagorie, the first animated cartoon, created by Émile Cohl, is shown in Paris, France.

In 1953 the first meeting of Narcotics Anonymous took place, in Southern California. In 1970 the Venera 7 was launched. It later become the first spacecraft to successfully transmit data from the surface of another planet (Venus).

In 1977 the Soviet icebreaker Arktika became the first surface ship to reach the North Pole. In 1978 Double Eagle II became the first balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean when it landed in Miserey, France near Paris, 137 hours after leaving Presque Isle, Maine.

In 2008 American swimmer Michael Phelps became the first person to win eight gold medals at one Olympic Games.

Today is the birthday of Davy Crockett, the American frontiersman and politician who died in the defense of the Alamo. Born in 1786, he once said "'better to keep a good conscience with an empty purse, than to get a bad opinion of myself, with a full one.”
