Human skull found at Mount Maunganui

Police are investigating after a human skull has been found at Mount Maunganui.

UPDATED 2.29PM: A human skull has been found at Mount Maunganui this afternoon.

Police are at Salisbury Wharf after a skull was fished up just after 2pm.

Detective Sergeant Alan Kingsbury says there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the skull.

"It (the case) is still early and we are working on it."

A police spokesperson says that a fisherman has found an item which he believed may be human remains.

"Police were called and we are currently examining the item and making inquiries."

Reports are coming in of a skull washing up in Mount Maunganui.

A witness at the scene says police are down on Salisbury Wharf after a "human skull was fished up".
