One of the sweetest ways to donate to a great cause has returned for another year, with the annual SPCA Cupcake Day, and Tauranga schools are doing their bit to chip in.

Since 2009 supporters have helped the SPCA raise over $2.3 million to help animals, simply by selling cupcakes.

This year, the teachers and year 5 and 6 students from Greenpark School are participating in the cupcake day.

'The year 5 and 6 students (around 300 children) will focus on what community means and how they can support local initiatives. The SPCA is an important part of our community in Greerton. Many of our children have adopted animals from there, or volunteered to help animals feel more comfortable around people,” says teacher and organizer Stephanie Harris.

'The students are aware that the SPCA is a charity and therefore does not get any funding from the Government or Council and yet they do so many amazing things for our furry little friends. It is important at Greenpark School, that we support our community and give back when we can. So being part of the National Cupcake Day was a no brainer.”

On Monday, August 6 between 11.30am and 12.30pm students and families will bring in cupcakes, slices, biscuits and whole cakes. The small items will be available to buy for as little as 50 cents.

There will also be a cake walk. This is when whole cakes are on display and customers can buy a one dollar ticket for the cake of their choice to be into win that cake later on in the day.

'The whole school, family, friends and the local community are invited to come and buy some yummy treats or enter the cake walk raffle,” says Stephanie.

'Our goal for this is to raise as much money as we can for the SPCA so we can help them reach their 30,000 dollar target.”

'This initiative is also about raising awareness about SPCA, who they are and what they do and if we are lucky, encouraging people to give a loving home to an animal in need.”
