Laying the foundation stone for the Royal Victoria Theatre on Manners St, Wellington, Alderman William Lyon welcomed the new amenity – ‘a theatre [was] a necessary concomitant of an advanced state of civilization.'
In 1976 John Walker won gold in Montreal. Following in the footsteps of Jack Lovelock and Peter Snell, Walker won gold in the Olympic 1500 m. Black African nations boycotted the Games in protest at the All Blacks' tour of South Africa.

In world history on this day in 1790 the U.S. Patent Office opened. In 1904 the Trans-Siberian railroad connecting the Ural mountains with Russia's Pacific coast, was completed. In 1971 Apollo 15 astronauts took a drive on the moon in their land rover.
In 1991 the US and the USSR signed a long-range nuclear weapons reduction pact. In 1999 NASA purposely crashed its Discovery Program's Lunar Prospector into the moon, ending the agency's mission to detect frozen water on Earth's moon.
