In today's forecast we are expecting some morning cloud, followed by a fine day with light winds.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 5 degrees. Humidity is 100 per cent.

High tide is at 12.30pm and low tide is at 6.40pm. There's a sea swell of .6m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.14pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1892 the Wellington and Manawatu Railway (WMR) Company's steam locomotive No.10 established a world speed record for the narrow 3 foot 6 inch (1067 mm) gauge, averaging 68 km per hour on a two-hour run and hitting a top speed of 103 km per hour.

In 1965 riots rocked Mt Eden prison. The disturbance followed a botched escape attempt and lasted into the next day. Prisoners took several warders hostage and fire gutted part of the prison

In world history on this day in 1588 the Spanish Armada set sail from Corunna. In 1715 the Riot Act went into effect in England. In 1867 Imperial troops in Guizhou, China, killed 20,000 Miao rebels.

In 1881 Sioux chief Sitting Bull surrendered to the U.S. Army. In 1944 Adolf Hitler was wounded in an assassination attempt by German Army officers at Rastenburg.

In 1951 King Abdullah of Jordan was assassinated. In 1969 Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon.

In 1976 the Viking spacecraft landed on Mars and began taking soil samples.

Today is the birthday of NZ explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. Born in 1919, he once said "It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves".

He also said "People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things".
