Another magical autumn day

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a fine day with light winds. There is rain expected over the long weekend ahead.

It's a three-clothing and one-windproof layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 5 degrees. Humidity is 94 per cent.

High tide is at 7.50am and low tide is at 2.10pm. There's a sea swell of 0.1m, with a sea temperature of 17 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.02pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 3.30 and 6.30pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1916 the HMS New Zealand fought at Jutland. In the misty North Sea on the last day of May 1916, 250 warships from Britain's Royal Navy and Germany's High Seas Fleet clashed in the First World War's greatest and bloodiest sea battle.

In 1975 Mona Blades vanished. Eighteen-year-old Mona Blades was last seen sitting in the back seat of an orange Datsun station wagon. Her body was never found and her disappearance has never been explained.

In world history on this day in 1879 New York's Madison Square Garden opened its doors for the first time. In 1902 the Boer War ends with the Treaty of Vereeniging. In 1915 a German zeppelin made an air raid on London. In 1928 the first flight over the Pacific took off from Oakland. In 1941 an armistice was arranged between the British and the Iraqis. In 1969 John Lennon and Yoko Ono recorded 'Give Peace a Chance.”

In 1974 Israel and Syria signed an agreement on the Golan Heights. In 1979 Zimbabwe proclaimed its independence.

Today is the birthday of American poet Walt Whitman. Born in 1819, he wrote "Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you." and "Be curious, not judgemental".

This week has seen a succession of fine autumn days with stunning sunrises and sunsets. Our video today was filmed last night in Papamoa capturing some of the pink hues - the 'Papamoa pink' - that Papamoa is known for.
