Around 600 secondary teachers in Tauranga are meeting this week to discuss their upcoming collective agreement negotiations with the government.

'We teach because we are motivated by bringing out the best in our students. We want them to leave school equipped with the skills, confidence, values and knowledge that will allow them to make the most of every opportunity in life.” says PPTA Western Bay of Plenty Chair, Tania Rae.

'Teaching is a complex profession, and one that carries with it a duty of care and responsibility. Secondary teachers play an important role in making New Zealand a better place for all of us to live and grow.

'Our profession is facing an unprecedented shortage of teachers; now is the time for the government to work with us to implement the solutions and make secondary teaching the desirable career it should be.

'Teachers care deeply about the students they work with. We won't sit back and allow their futures be affected by a degraded education system," says Tania.

'At our meeting, we'll be discussing what we want to take to the negotiating table and the solutions we expect."

The Western Bay of Plenty paid union meeting will be held at 1pm, Thursday, 31 May, Stadium Lounge, ASB Arena. Media and others who don't belong to the union are welcome to join the first part of the meeting.
