Thunderstorms and hail in the forecast

The weather forecast today is for showers with hail and possible thunderstorms. Westerlies should be dying out in the evening.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 15 and an overnight low of 6 degrees. Humidity is 78 per cent.

Low tide is at 9am and high tide is at 3.20pm. There's a sea swell of 0.2m, with a sea temperature of 18 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.05pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 8 and 10pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1861 The Press went to press. Published from a cottage in Montreal Street, the first edition was a six-page tabloid which sold for sixpence.

In 1978 Bastion Point protesters were evicted. Police and army personal removed 222 people from Bastion Point, Auckland, ending an occupation that had begun in January 1977. Ngāti Whātua were protesting against the loss of land in the Ōrakei Block, which had once been declared ‘absolutely inalienable'.

In 2008 Scott Dixon won the Indianapolis 500. Dixon's victory at the Brickyard in 2008, the first Indianapolis 500 win by a New Zealander, helped him secure his second Indy Racing League championship.

In world history on this day in 585 BC Thales of Greece made the first known prediction of a solar eclipse. In 1810 Argentina declared independence from Napoleonic Spain. In 1946 Jordan gained independence from Britain. In 1953 the first atomic cannon was fired in Nevada. In 1977 the movie Star Wars debuted.

Today is the birthday of American writer Raymond Carver. Born in 1938 he once wrote "Don't complain, don't explain.”
