EARLIER:

Motorists are being advised of a slip which is blocking both lanes of SH2 at Waiotahe near Opotiki.

A police media spokesperson says there are road closures and diversions in place.

"The slip has closed the highway between Parkinson Rd and Pohutukawa Drive.

"There are diversions in place along Paerata Ridge Rd and Verrall Rd."

A witness at the scene, Jo Keller, says she had a lucky escape.

"We were lucky, if we had passed a minute or two earlier we would have worn it."

The slip happened at about 11.30am, she says.

"We were about fifth in line from it with more cars behind us too.

"An elderly woman in a blue hatch had obviously come through it when the slip came down and her car wasn't damaged but there was mud all over it."
