State Highway 36, between Tauranga and Rotorua, is open following a serious crash.

Emergency services were called to a single vehicle crash on SH36/Pyes Pa Road around 10.45pm.

A police spokesperson says a car had crashed into a tree.

The highway was closed for some time, but is now open.

Police have not released any details of a the occupant/occupants of the vehicle at this stage.

Rumours have been circulating on Facebook that it was a fatal crash, but police are yet to confirm this.

Meanwhile, emergency services are at the scene of a crash at the intersection of SH29 and SH1, at Karapiro.

No other information is available at this stage.
