Popular ride-sharing app Uber is launching in Tauranga, and the company is looking for drivers.

A town hall-style meeting with the Uber New Zealand general manager and senior operations team will be held at Hotel Armitage from 6.30pm tonight to discuss the details of the venture.

People interest in driving with Uber can also visit Hotel Armitage from Wednesday to Friday between 10am and 6pm this week, as well as 10am-4pm Saturday and 10am-6pm Monday, to find out more information.

Uber spokesperson Nicky Preston says Tauranga has been calling out for ridesharing for a while.

‘We're excited to respond to that demand. There have been 23,000 app opens in Tauranga in 2017, among people from 74 countries,” she says.

'We're calling on as many locals as possible to come and see us next week to hear about the opportunities Uber will bring to the area and for them to earn money.”

The service allows people to be taxi drivers in their own cars, with the flexibility to work as much or as little as they like.

Uber will launch in Tauranga on February 1, 2018.

The meeting tonight will take place in the Washington Room of Hotel Armitage, 9 Willow Street, from 6.30-7.30pm.
