Papamoa residents turned out in their droves to hear a briefing on current council issues from ward councillors Leanne Brown and Steve Morris this week.

The crowd grew and grew, moving from one room to another and to finally max out the largest room at the Papamoa Recreation Centre, with around 250 people attending.

They turned out to hear their councillors' brief and background them on the current issues and changes affecting Papamoa East as well as a sometimes less than flattering description of previous council acts.

Steve's description of events leading to Plan Change 25 provided some background and the reason why Papamoa residents are keeping a close eye on the city council.

'The whole idea of Plan Change 25 is to get the planning maps to look like what is actually happening on the ground,” says Steve.

'At present we have residential houses being built in an industrial area. Soon we'll have houses being built on what was supposed to be an active reserve. We have apartment buildings going on what was supposed to be two and three storey land.”

Steve says some residents in part of Palm Springs were not made aware of the shifting zones and only found out after they had bought their properties.

'The first they found out about it was once they moved. When you look at how much people put into their property. Not to be told at the time they made those decisions what is going on. It made them pretty angry.”

The councillors also briefed their ward on the Te Tumu development, special Housing areas, Papamoa East Interchange, Tsunami Evacuation, Opal Drive and transitional housing.
