What’s On? Kites & Wood Carving

Good morning SunLive readers, and welcome to winter.

Can you believe half the year is over already? Time is the one thing we can never get any more of.

So it pays to spend it wisely. And today you can, with some fun, free events inspired by Matariki.

This afternoon hundreds of kites will fill the skies at Fergusson Park for the annual Matariki Kite Day. There will be a range of designs on show, from simple sled kites to impressive animal creations. Head down to Fergusson Park between 12pm and 4pm to catch a glimpse.

At the Historic Village, Whare Thompson will be giving a Maori wood carving demonstration. Whare will show carvings that he uses to demonstrate different wood carving techniques using adze and chisels. This may involve the moulding of figures and surface patterns. People are more than welcome to ask questions. He'll be down opposite The Incubator between 8am and 4pm.
