Acclaimed Kiwi street artist Graham ‘Mr G' Hoete will be sending fans of his work on a special treasure hunt with an arty-twist.

The renowned Tauranga Moana artist is giving away two spray-painted coastline landscapes of Papamoa and Mount Maunganui this Sunday. But there's a catch – you'll have to find them first.

The paintings, which are both about 100cm long by 50cm high, will be hidden at separate locations in the sand dunes close to the walking tracks in Papamoa and the Mount.

And to keep things interesting, the artist will be posting clues which hint at the locations of the paintings on his social media pages, so make sure you keep an eye out for the #mrgtreasurehunt hashtag.

Graham says for the past month he's been heading down to the beach to take photos of the sunrise, and all those dawns watching Tama-nui-te-rā appear on the horizon and climb into the morning sky inspired him to create the two beachscapes.

'I've been wanting to get some really nice shots of the sunrise, the silhouette of Motiti, the moana, the beautiful skies, all of it together just makes for pretty epic photos.

'Last week I thought I should do something here, spray-paint some landscapes, capture that natural beautiful with my own kind of aesthetic. Traditionally a lot of artists use oil or watercolour, but my preferred medium is spray-paint.”

This past year has seen Graham busily creating art up and down New Zealand, and overseas, like the massive murals he produced of Kiwi basketballer Steven Adams in Oklahoma City in June and legendary musician Prince in Minnesota in November.

But when asked which one is better – creating art at home or abroad – he says the answer's simple.

'Nothing beats home. I love New Zealand, especially rural New Zealand and those obscure, unique gems that are little pockets of beauty which Aotearoa presents throughout the motu (country).

'Landscapes are a great way for people to connect with their homes. I painted one at my cousin's home in Sydney of Mauao from the Matakana side, because she's from the island and the maunga has quite a distinctive profile from that angle.

'That was awesome, being able to give her that connection back to her home and whenua (land).”
