Several teams will look to extend their unbeaten streaks in the Baywide Premier and Division One Club Rugby Competitions today.

Heading into Week Three of the competition, defending champions Rangataua are unbeaten and lead the premier table, while Ngongotaha, Opotiki and Papamoa have all established themselves at the top of the Division 1 table following back-to-back wins.

In the Baywide Premier Competition, Tauranga Sports and Whakarewarewa are tussling for position on the table, with both teams tied on points and sitting in fourth position.

Tauranga Sports head coach Zane Winslade says Last week was a good result for the teams because they'd shown some real guts and determination to grind out a win against a quality side.

'We improved in a lot of the areas we wanted to, but it's also pretty visible that we have some important parts of our game to work on. Whakarewarewa are going to be a big test and those are the games we love to play, so we're looking forward to this weekend.

'I have been really pleased with the work ethic of our team and I think that is ultimately what we are looking for from every player: If all 22 players are fully committed to emptying the tank this weekend then I am sure we'll meet our performance goals.”

Whakarewarewa Head Coach Joe Savage acknowledged discipline will be a focus for his team this coming weekend.

Joe says his side will implement a similar game plan to last week, but will focus more on their discipline, especially off our defensive line.

'We had a bit of trouble there in the weekend with people and their interpretation of the law and what the referee demeaned suitable. Set play and set phases for us will be another focus of ours especially in the forwards.

'We didn't always have it go our way in the weekend but when it did things seemed to happen for us.”

Highlighting the strengths of the opposition, Joe says Tauranga Sports have always had a strong defensive structure and don't seem to have a weakness there.

'We will be looking to use our strengths, with a good attacking backline and changing it up in the weekend to give it some variation will help towards that. Attacking out wide and in the centre will help with that but being able to maintain our discipline and structure in the close channels initially.”

While in the Baywide Division 1 Competition, Ruatoki will host Opotiki in what will be a tough test for the home side with their visitors displaying some early form in the first two rounds of the Division 1 competition.

Opotiki coach Dave Ngatai says they've never played Ruatoki before, having come down from the Premiers last year, but with their opposition having scored a few points against the other teams to date, 'they must be alright”.

'Our first game up against Katikati was good, we played reasonably well putting phases together and got our structures and patterns going. However this past weekend we came up against Judea, a slightly bigger team.

'We tried to play the game we wanted to play but they were pretty tidy, which was a good thing for us because it puts the pressure and onus on us to be better.”

Ngatai highlights the need for his team to focus on improving their communication this weekend.

'Really we need to keep to our structure and patterns. We went away from them for some unknown reason. Communication this weekend will be a key message and staying with our structures and patterns is a big must for us.”

'It will be great if we can get the win, but we just need to keep improving week in week out.”

Ruatoki prove to be a strong team on home soil, having narrowly missed out on the win against Papamoa, the team will be eager to post a win on the board this weekend.

Their experience and whanau support will play a crucial role in delivering the win over their Eastern Bay rivals.
