On December 25, St Peters in the City, Tauranga, warmly invites the community to enjoy a free Christmas dinner from 5pm-7pm.

Christmas is a time for sharing, connection and togetherness, and no one should feel alone on this special day, said Reverend Enosa Auva’a.

For the past 36 years, St Peters in the City has been bringing people together around the table through this much-loved community tradition.

Reverend Auva’a said the evening was especially for those who might not otherwise have the chance to sit down and enjoy a festive meal in good company.

“There’s no need to book – just come along. You’ll enjoy a traditional Christmas meal with all the trimmings, uplifting entertainment, the chance to meet others, and an opportunity to celebrate the birth of Christ together,” he said.

“This is a time of fellowship, unity, and sharing God’s love with the people of Tauranga.”

Behind the scenes, more than 100 volunteers from the church and the wider community work together to prepare and serve the meal.

The scale is impressive: about 50 chickens, 10 hams, 300kg of potatoes and kumara, and 20 pumpkins, as well as salads and desserts – all cooked with care and generosity.

Guests can sit back and enjoy beautiful music and performances from the church’s music group, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere.

“The community, local churches, businesses, and the Good Neighbourhood Trust have all shown incredible generosity through their support and donations,” said Reverend Auva’a.

“Come just as you are and join us as we celebrate Christmas together — St Peters style!”
