The heart of the city taskforce has been endorsed by the City Transformation Committee and awaits the Tauranga City Council's approval before the eight new task force members begin collecting their $170 a meeting.
The taskforce which is being formed to assist the council to plan and drive delivery of the heart of the city programme was first mooted at the committee's March meeting.
Councillor Steve Morris nominated fellow councillors Larry Baldock, Terry Molloy, Max Mason and Gail McIntosh to the taskforce which is expected to be rounded out with a city heart Technical Advisory Group member, a TAG group member, representatives recognising Ngai Tamarawaho and Ngati Tapu mana whenua connection with the city centre, and a governance rep from Mainstreet Tauranga.
The proposal is to pay representatives according to the council's external representatives policy - $170 per meeting. The policy provides a consistent approach to the acknowledgement of community and tangata whenua contributions in council decision making processes.
The stated intent of the taskforce is to help with the delivery of the Heart of the City programme. Staff advice is the term of the taskforce should be set from May 1 to June 2018, which aligns it with the Long Term Plan 2018-2028 final decision timeline.
During the previous council's Civic Space Options project, a project steering group was established to perform a similar role; to set broad directions to be implemented by staff for the day to day implementation and management of the project.
The new project steering group or taskforce's role is to assist the council in planning developing shaping and driving the Heart of the City Project.
It is to report stakeholder views and promote dialogue on initiatives within the Heart of the City programme, and act as a think tank and sounding board for the active transformation projects, plus identify ways to increase the involvement of the community in the Heart of the City programme.
The taskforce is also the conduit for Heart of the City project communications with the community.
Council policy requires the community to be, 'Informed, inspired and engaged in projects that create a vibrant, safe and successful city centre”.
It is also the forum for discussing the diverse range of issues related to the city centre and will be offering ongoing stakeholder advice on the delivery of the objectives of the Heart of the City programme. The Council will make the final decision on the Terms of Reference and appointments.

The one thing that brings people to start making a "heart of a city' is a vibrant retail sector - in order to promote that aspect which in turn brings the people then you need sufficient local parking. All the namby-pamby rhetoric from those professing to care (mostly greenie watermelons) will not change the reality that the private motor vehicle is going to remain the preferred mode of transport for a considerable number of years, whether it remains fossil fuel powered or an acceptable alternative - all the flash council offices planned are not going to bring people to the city to help restart its heart.
Unbelievable

According to this article the city task force has been endorsed by the City Transformation Committee and now awaits TCC approval if that is the case who actually appointed them in the first place. We have far too many of these quasi committees or organisations trying to put in their 4 cents worth It seems that every time something new comes on the scene we have "A Meeting of the Committee" in order to form another committee so if something goes wrong there is so many finger,s in the pie it becomes impossible to allocate blame. What is it with these elected members ?The new Mayor and his councilors were going to be prudent on spending,Only 6 months since election and the want spend like there is no tomorrow. Please try and live within your means like the rest of us have to do.
Unbelievable 2

WOW! (an expression long before DT) I have lost track of the number of committees, task forces etc involved in this grandiose nonsense (sorry plan). How many more will join the gravy train until our apparently MIA mayor makes a stand and what will the final cost be for the Tauranga Palace?

You are so rite but according to Council staff the business people in the CBD know nothing. If they admit that we know what we are talking about they realise that they would be without a job. The existing Council building doesn't bring people into the CBD so why would a new building be any different?
Bring in the Commissioner!
