Sewage overflow in harbour

Health warnings are posted after treated sewage was tipped into the harbour. Photo: Supplied.

Treated wastewater was discharged into Tauranga harbour twice overnight and is likely to be discharged again says council staff in a weather update at 4.40pm.

Tipping sewage into the harbour is a last resort, but it is within consent conditions, says the council statement.

The wastewater system in general is running at capacity with a lot of excess water getting into the network. A sewer manhole at 3rd Avenue is been coned off for safety in case it overflows overnight.

The Chapel Street wastewater treatment plant is working overtime to cope with large amounts of inflow coming into the system.

As at 4.40pm Tauranga City Council says Grenada Street is still closed and will remain closed overnight. Detours are in place. Drivers are asked to respect the road closure and do not endanger others by moving cones.

Tauranga city council received 18 calls between 3pm Tuesday – 9:30am Wednesday morning concerning water on properties.

The city council received 24 further rain related service requests today. They were for a mixture of surface flooding, blocked sumps, sandbag requests and ponding on private property.

Overall it is still regarded as a minor event for the city with most stormwater systems coping. Two properties had water enter garages, one in Ngatai Road and Papamoa Beach Road, and one property at Papamoa Beach Road where a private drain issue has caused water to enter a bathroom.

City council staff are not aware of any house evacuations in the Tauranga City area.

Water processing plants:

Both water treatment plants are operating. They were taken offline this morning due to turbidity, too many small particles of sediment in the water supply streams.

The base track is closed until further notice. Will reviewed tomorrow.

Tauranga City Council staff and contractors will maintain a watch on the severe weather until it passes. The Western Emergency Operations Centre and the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre are providing support.

Treated wastewater is not sewage

Why would a Tauranga City Council statement say, 'Treated wastewater was discharged into Tauranga harbour twice overnight and is likely to be discharged again says council staff in a weather update at 4.40pm. Tipping sewage into the harbour is a last resort, but it is within consent conditions, says the council statement'? Treated wastewater is NOT sewage, likely cleaner, safer than most drink on this planet and a jolly sight cleaner than what is leaving our creeks and rivers, drains and off our roads directly into the harbour at the moment.

Lucky the sign is there...

Unlike the farmers who get massive fines for letting effluent get into waterways, Councils can dump sewage for free.

"Treated Wastewater" ....I agree with Murray Guy. Are the council lying or hugely mistaken?
