No worries at One Love

This weekend the hugely popular One Love festival returns to Tauranga.

Moewaka Coffey was on site all day Friday, with little sleep Friday night as his team worked to set up in the Tauranga Domain.

Hailing from Wellington, Moe has been here in Tauranga for four months, overseeing the organisation of the event.

He tour manages on the weekends and contracts to One Love as an event manager.

'Everything is going really well”, says Moe. 'As at 3.45pm Saturday we have over 15,000 people here. The first couple of hours with people arriving through the gates is fairly hectic, but it's now settled down. We're really happy with where we're at and the team is really comfortable today.”

He checks the growing crowd numbers via a smart app on his phone.

The organisation seems smart, and behind the scenes everything is running smoothly. By Saturday evening, the crowd has swelled to over 18,000. There are over 180 on the security team, as well as an ambassador's team making sure everyone has a great time. There's a strong police presence and Moe has a briefing every hour with them, catching up on any issues that may arise.

'Our biggest discussion point today has been heat exhaustion,” says Moe. 'We've put a lot of effort into making sure there's plenty of free water available. It's such a perfect day weather-wise, and some maybe people push their own limits.

"When you get a combination of things like alcohol, and diabetes in some cases, and heat, and not really realizing how hot they are it can cause problems for them. But we have an amazing medics team on site and a lot of resources behind that, and they've dealt with the situation really well.”

All over the park, people chill out on picnic blankets, under hessian shade cloths or on their fold out chairs enjoying the sun, music, and great food from food trucks

'Tauranga is an amazing city and this is an amazing venue that is really under-utilised,” says Moe. 'We're very lucky to be able to do something like this that is so positive in the heart of the city. I just hope that it's supported.”

Moe finds social media quite a neutral ground for feedback as anyone can say what they want.

Backstage, in the green room, the bands are relaxing. 'They're enjoying themselves,” says Moe. There are massage therapists, bean bags under the trees, fresh fruit and drinks. There's even a barber.

The crowd is relaxed. 'So friendly,” say police who are also enjoying the music. 'We've had no customers.”

'[Event director] Pato Alvarez has put together an amazing team,” says Moe. 'This is his vision essentially.”
