Cross city friendships

Merivale and Bethlehem teenagers are teaming up to learn from each other and build across-city friendships.
It is part of a Merivale Community Centre mentoring programme called, Mean Mentoring, which was officially launched on Friday.
The centre's Lizzie Macrae says the programme is an opportunity for Merivale students to meet people from outside the area.

"A lot of them don't get the chance to get out of Merivale," says Lizzie.
"They're getting role modelling from a positive teenager and are doing different kinds of activities."
She says many of the Merivale youth are at a stage in their lives when they are making crucial decisions and it is important they have positive influences in their lives.
When the students meet, they choose an activity such as going for coffee, ten pin bowling, playing a sport, or spending time with the mentor's family.
The programme has Year 13 Bethlehem College students paired with 11-14 year olds who live in Merivale.
