A Katikati engineer is one of three people to receive an inaugural scholarship prize offered by University of Waikato and engineering consultants Beca.
Kevin Weller has won the scholarship worth $2500, which Beca regional manager, John Revington, says is good assistance for improving the engineering skill base in the Bay of Plenty.
"We have offices in Hamilton and Tauranga so working with the University of Waikato's School of Engineering is really an obvious fit for us," says John.
For Kevin, winning the scholarship was good recognition of his undergraduate work at University of Waikato.
It is also a reflection on his work experience with Auckland-based precision engineering company MetPresco last summer, where he had the opportunity to get hands-on with lathes and mills.
"It was very useful to get that practical experience," says Kevin.
"At university we're trained to do the design, so it's good to work with the guys who make up those designs - they know things we don't get taught!"
The other two winners of the scholarship were Peter Leijen from the Hawke's Bay and the other was Sam Garrett from Paeroa.
