Workshops aim to boost Maori achievement

NCEA workshops are being held in the Bay of Plenty, aiming to boost Maori achievement in education.
The workshops are designed to give families a better understanding of NCEA.
Students can attend night workshops and teachers will attend workshops held during the day.

NZQA's Maori deputy chief executive, Daryn Bean, says recent research identifies the challenges the education sector faces to increase Maori educational achievement.
'We are offering our support to the vital work that schools are doing in this area.”
He says providing appropriate information to whanau, learners and kaiako is one way NZQA is taking a proactive stance through the delivery of these workshops.
'We want Maori to succeed in all areas, so there will be a real emphasis on pathway options within NCEA, but we are also aware of the value that qualifications such as Te Waharoa, the National Certificate in Maori, can add to academic options by recognising Maori skills and knowledge.”
The workshops will be held in Rotorua on May 12 and 13 and in Whakatane on May 11.
Those wanting to attend should contact NZQA on 0800 697 296.
