Car crashes 6m down bank

One lane of State Highway 5 is closed after a vehicle crashed down a 6m bank early this morning.

The two people, a man and woman, were trapped inside the vehicle when it crashed on the Napier-Taupo Road, 5km north of Te Pohue, around 3.30am.

'Two occupants of the vehicle were trapped and Fire Service has extracted one female from the vehicle, she was being taken by ambulance to Hastings Hospital,” says a statement from police.

'Later the male occupant was also extracted and taken in another ambulance to hospital. Both occupants, the only occupants of the vehicle have moderate to serious injuries.”

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and say the road remains open for those travelling in the area.
