Chch students enrol in Bay

The Ministry of Education is reporting there are 59 children from Christchurch enrolled at schools around the Bay of Plenty.

Many Christchurch schools are damaged from the February 22 earthquake and Education Minister Anne Tolley says one quarter of them are asking for assistance.

Tauranga Primary School has received 10 enrolments of Christchurch children.

With the damage so much, some families are temporarily evacuating to other regions across the country.

About 29 children are now enrolled at schools across the Western Bay of Plenty, with a further 21 children enrolled at schools in Rotorua and nine more in Whakatane.

Seven children aged between five and 10 are enrolled at Tauranga Primary School.

The school's principal, Jenny McNicol, says some of the children's parents are also in Tauranga.

'Sometimes dad has stayed back and the one we had today the mum was going to have to leave because she's got work,” says Jenny.

'The parents that have come; we are putting in a support network for them.”

Jenny says all of the Christchurch evacuees have family in Tauranga.

Parents and grandparents of other Tauranga Primary School students have offered to pay for the Christchurch children's stationery, uniforms and schoolbags.

'I think everyone fully understands and appreciates their situation.

'They have already been through a lot.”

It is not known how long the students will stay in Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty.

'The aftershocks are still ongoing – some parents are just saying we just want to be out of it for a while.”
